What Is Data Masking?

Just as the name implies, Data Masking, also known as Data Obfuscation, is a simple technique where enterprises make use of various means to hide their data. This means that real data is masked by a group of random characters or another datum. The real-data can be accessed & viewed by only those who have access to it.

The major objective of Data Masking technique is to protect sensitive, private information in the case where the data is visible to these set of persons who don’t have any access to it.

To explain this better, let’s consider the example where an organization is working with a freelancer to help them build a database. If the organization doesn’t wish to reveal its customers’ sensitive information to this person then, they can mask this data thereby allowing the contractor to test the database environment without having access to the original customer data.

Data Masking and Security

The enterprises in the following scenarios can use data Masking

To Protect Data From Third-Party Vendors- Sometimes enterprises have to share their data with third-party marketers, consultants or others & if they want to keep any part of the information confidential then they can opt for Data Masking.

Operator Error- Most of the data breaches often occur as a result of operator errors & to safeguard the data from such type of errors, then they can opt for data masking.

Data Masking has now become an integral part of the enterprises Data Security strategy.
